MEDIA STATEMENT: MUHAMMADIYAH REJECTS EXTREMISM, REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR BANGLADESHI MIGRANT COMMUNITY & STRONGLY PROMOTES SINGAPORE’S SOCIAL HARMONY
23 Aug 2024
- We have been made aware of the recent expression of extremist views by a foreign preacher from Bangladesh within Singapore. We reject such teachings as they are opposed to the values of peace, respect, and understanding that nurture our harmonious multi-religious and multi-ethnic society. Extremism, in any form, poses a threat to the very fabric of our nation and has no place in Singapore.
- Muhammadiyah Association extends its deepest gratitude to the Bangladeshi migrant community for their invaluable contributions to Singapore’s development. We recognise and appreciate the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices made by these individuals and their families in helping to build our nation. We wholeheartedly uphold their right to practise their faith peacefully, in accordance with the principles of moderation and tolerance that are central to Islam.
- As the Quran beautifully states, “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” (Quran 49:13).
- This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognising our shared humanity and embracing the diversity that enriches our society. It underscores the Islamic principle that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety.
- We call upon all communities in Singapore, including the Bangladeshi migrant community, to remain vigilant and reject ideologies that promote violence, hatred, or division. Let us work together to build a Singapore where every individual feels safe, respected, and valued, regardless of their background or beliefs.
- We should not let this incident affect the good relations that we have fostered between us. Muhammadiyah Association remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering understanding and cooperation among all communities in Singapore.
